A Real Man Knows How to Cook!

Granted I'm biased, but I sure love how Ryan whips up flavorful meals for us. We have different tastes when it comes to smoothies, but for food overall he's quite talented. These are gluten-free noodles made especially for me. Thanks, Ry.

I've already admitted my lack of kitchen skills, and feel fortunate to have a husband who enjoys the cooking process. And that's not all; I frequently catch him watching cooking shows to improve his techniques.

Lucky, lucky me.

Just look at that Parmesan concentration.

His & Hers: Smoothie Wars

As Blendtec devotees, we literally go through a dozen fruit smoothies a week. While we'll both start with frozen berries, that's where the similarity ends and our differences begin. We've learned it's just better for us to make our own smoothies.

Ryan's more of a yogurt, sugar, and milk guy. He uses recipes from the Blendtec book, and discovered  the secret juiciness of grapes. In his own right, he does a pretty good job.

I tend to blend to the beat of my own drum. I prefer soymilk to milk, a dash of protein powder, add in a carrot, bit of spinach or even spoonful of avocado (makes it smooth and creamy!) Why not get in extra nutrients, sneak 'em in with the sweet fruit?

After my six months away from the sweet stuff last year you could say I'm quite anti-sugar. Sugar-free apple sauce or just a little gob of orange juice concentrate adds plenty of sweetness for me.

No matter how delicious I think my smoothies are, when Ryan tries them he always thinks they taste funny. I really don't like the sugar or dairy in his frozen concoctions.

When I mentioned the idea of this blog post to Ryan he said, "Oh. I could write that fast:'Ryan's are delicious and Crystalee's are not.'"

Oh, let the smoothie wars begin!

P.S. We were happy last week at Disneyland to see Minnie Mouse has her own blender.

His & Hers: Confessions from the Beck Kitchen

Note to female role models in Crystalee's life: there is still hope. It's not that she's incapable, lazy, or a spoiled princess...Ryan is just really good at cooking/cleaning. He also teaches her to see humor and laugh at herself, and the truth is, Crystalee's far behind Ryan in terms of domestic skill. Do we see an upcoming New Year's resolution for Crystalee in the domestic sphere? I think YES.

Three recent days in the Beck kitchen

Day 1 - Crystalee comes home from work for lunch.

Crystalee: Oh, Ry, you've been cooking again. This looks so yummy. Wow, you mixed rice, eggs, ham, and used a variety of healthy vegetables - this is great fried rice, babe. Good work!

Ryan: Oh this? No big deal, just used what we had around.

Day 2 - Hanging out around the apartment.

Crystalee: Wow, Ry. You've really done a great job putting together the living room. Adding in the couches and arranging it like this opens up the space and makes it feel a lot more homey.

Ryan: Glad you like it. So...are you gonna do those dishes? You know, I'm getting tired of asking.

Crystalee: Yeah, I just didn't get to them quite yet. Sorry. (She washes them, or stomps away, depending on the time of the month)

Day 3
- Putting away groceries.

Crystalee: Thanks again for doing our Costco shopping. You picked out great food.

Ryan: You're welcome, thanks for helping carry it in from the car. I got the best deals, grabbing our favorites and also picked up the special hummus and gluten free stuff you asked for.

As you can read, Crystalee's got it good. Ladies, don't be too jealous - he cooks, he cleans, he shops, he arranges furniture...and we haven't even gotten to laundry yet! Ryan - your wife will work on being a better kitchen contributor.

Confession is the first step to change, after all. ;)
